France secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Paraguay to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The only goal of the match came from Kylian Mbappé, who calmly converted a penalty.
Before kick-off, as part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the United States, a military jet flyover took place above Philadelphia’s stadium, drawing loud applause from the crowd.
Paraguay Prove Tough Opponents
Paraguay made life extremely difficult for France with a disciplined, physical, and well-organized performance.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock in the first half, which ended goalless.
In the 70th minute, Diego Gómez brought down Désiré Doué inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded France a penalty.
Mbappé confidently sent goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way to score the game’s only goal.
The French captain nearly doubled his tally in stoppage time, but Gill produced an outstanding save to deny him.
The goal was Mbappé’s 19th in his 19th FIFA World Cup appearance, leaving him just one goal behind Lionel Messi’s record of 20 World Cup goals.
Mbappé also moved level with Messi at the top of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot standings with seven goals. Erling Haaland of Norway and Harry Kane of England follow with five goals each.
Under FIFA regulations, if two players finish the tournament level on goals, the Golden Boot is awarded to the player with the most assists—a statistic that currently favours Mbappé.
Morocco Await France
France will face Morocco in the quarter-finals on Thursday, 9 July, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Morocco reached the last eight with an impressive 3–0 victory over Canada, producing one of the biggest surprises of the Round of 16. They will now take on France for a place in the semi-finals.
The Round of 16 concludes on Sunday with two highly anticipated matches: Brazil vs Norway and Mexico vs England. Once those fixtures are completed, the full quarter-final lineup of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be confirmed.
